Dopo essere stato il frontman del trio Paragons, John Holt è diventato uno degli interpreti solisti più popolari della Giamaica, segnando una serie di successi reggae per molti dei principali produttori discografici dell'isola.
La sua svolta internazionale arrivò nel 1974 con l’album “1000 Volts of Holt”, che fondeva il ritmo reggae con sofisticati arrangiamenti orchestrali.
Negli anni che seguirono, Holt rimase un gigante della scena reggae con ulteriori best seller e numerosi spettacoli sold-out in tutto il mondo.
Il meglio del suo lavoro solista è stato raccolto in un cofanetto da collezione "Essential Artist", l'ultima uscita Trojan Records che mette in mostra il talento degli artisti più amati della Giamaica.
