Pubblicato nell'aprile del 1997 dall'etichetta indipendente Raw Power (Castle Communications), "This Strange Engine" è il nono album di studio dei Marillion, un disco atipico nella carriera del gruppo e caratterizzato da sonorità più soffici e intimiste del solito, con ampio spazio lasciato a voce, chitarre acustiche e pianoforte e strutture molto meno complesse rispetto alle ambiziose composizioni neo prog per cui il gruppo è diventato famoso: in studio Steve Hogarth (voce, cori, tastiere e percussioni aggiunte), Steve Rothery (chitarra), Pete Trewavas (basso e cori), Mark Kelly (tastiere e cori) e Ian Mosley (batteria e percussioni) ricorsero ai contributi del Charlton & Newbottle School Choir per il brano "Man Of A Thousand Faces", del sassofonista Phil Todd (in "This Strange Engine"), del trombettista Paul Savage (in "Hope For The Future") e di Tim Perkins, che nella drammatica "Estonia" suona una balalaika. Questa edizione superdeluxe di 4 CD più un Blu-ray in confezione "media book" con libretto illustrato, un saggio che approfondisce la storia dell'album e rare foto, include nei quattro supporti audio l'album originale proposto con un nuovo remix, il concerto tenuto nella Orbit Room di Live Rapids, Michigan, il 21 settembre 1997 e una ampia raccolta di lati B di singoli, radio edit, missaggi e versioni alternative, brani proposti in acustico e altre registrazioni dal vivo. Il Blu-ray riproduce l'album in alta risoluzione stereo e in 5.1, aggiungendovi demo e alternate takes, jam session, video promozionali, un documentario di 85 minuti sulla realizzazione dell'album e il filmato del concerto bootleg "Live In Utrecht" (133 minuti di durata).
