WATTSTAX fu un evento di beneficenza organizzato dalla iconica Stax Records in concomitanza con il Watt Summer Festival per commemorare il settimo anniversario dei disordini di Watts del 1965 a Los Angeles. Con un pubblico di più di 100.000 persone e una durata di 7 ore, l’incredibile concerto principale ebbe luogo al Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum il 20 agosto 1972 all’insegna di Soul, Funk e Gospel. In prima linea erano i più grandi artisti della Stax: Isaac Hayes, The Staple Singers, Rufus Thomas, Johnnie Taylor, i Bar-Kays, Albert King e molti altri. Il reverendo Jesse Jackson aprì l'evento con suo discorso memorabile. Un estratto del concerto vide la luce in due doppi LP pochi mesi dopo l’evento, che vendettero in breve più di 500.000 copie. Nel 1973 seguì il film-concerto diretto da Mel Stuart 'Wattstax'. Oggi Stax Records presenta la versione più completa mai apparsa (integrale del concerto e delle performance collaterali, in primis al Summit Club, ma anche in esterni, compresa una stazione ferroviaria…), l’integrale del concerto al Memorial Coliseum la ristampa dei due storici doppi LP e un CD riassuntivo con il “Best of”.
Questo favoloso box di 12 CD contiene ben 31 tracce inedite (compreso il vero inno del funk “Theme from Shaft” di Isaac Hayes, all’epoca non pubblicato per motivi contrattuali), alcune delle quali registrate in posti alternativi al teatro, sia soprattutto presso il Summit Club (quattro CD di performance) che in altre postazioni (questo materiale occupa per intero l’ultimo CD della raccolta). Il libro di 76 pagine a colori contiene la storica introduzione ad opera di Al Bell, creatore dell’evento Wattstax, più nuovi saggi di Rob Bowman e A. Scott Galloway.
