Che James Brown sia la figura più importante della musica black è fuori discussione. “Sex Machine” è spesso considerato uno dei più grandi e importanti dischi funk di tutti i tempi, e forse il culmine del periodo creativo di Brown dal 1967 al 1971. Le prime cinque tracce di questo album sono registrazioni in studio con riverbero aggiuntivo e rumore del pubblico. Le ultime dieci tracce sono state registrate dal vivo al Bell Auditorium di Augusta, GA (ad eccezione della traccia 8). Queste registrazioni includono “Soul Power”, “Super Bad”, “Talkin' Loud And saying' Nothing” e soprattutto “(Get Up I Feel Like Being a) Sex Machine” (feat. Bobby Byrd), che trova la sua versione definitiva in questa “copertura live finta”; i 10 minuti più funky della storia della musica!
