Per il suo primo album su etichetta Philips (poi confluita nel Verve Music Group), il grande sassofonista baritono si circondò di un favoloso ensemble completato da Art Farmer al flicorno, Bob Brookmeyer al trombone a pistoni, Jim Hall alla chitarra, Bill Crow al contrabbasso e Dave Bailey alla batteria. Toni scuri, ovattati, a tratti notturni e due curiosità: nel brano che dà il titolo allalbum Mulligan si produce al pianoforte, mentre nel repertorio compare anche il Preludio in mi minore di Chopin.
