Pochi album hanno avuto un tale impatto all'uscita come Jesus Christ Superstar nel 1970. Poiché i compositori Andrew Lloyd Webber e Tim Rice non sono riusciti a far decollare finanziariamente il progetto come musical, lo hanno pubblicato come opera rock. Un doppio album concettuale sugli ultimi giorni di Gesù sulla terra. Il successo di questo doppio album fece sì che debuttasse a Broadway come musical nel 1971. Nel 1980, è stato anche il musical più longevo del West End di Londra. La versione cinematografica del 1973 divenne un blockbuster e rese Yvonne Elliman una grande star. Membri di gruppi come Soft Machine e Fairport Convention e The Grease Band prestarono i loro servizi musicali ai compositori. Ian Gillan sarebbe presto diventato famoso come cantante dei Deep Purple dopo l'opera rock.
