Thirteen e' il tredicesimo album in studio dei Soft Machine e apre un nuovo capitolo della loro storia, con una formazione che unisce esperienza e nuova energia: John Etheridge (presente da decenni nel progetto), Theo Travis, Fred Baker e il nuovo batterista Asaf Sirkis.
Il disco abbraccia l identita piu avventurosa della band, tra improvvisazioni atmosferiche, psichedelia, free jazz e jazz rock potente, con intrecci di fiati e groove di basso fretless. In piu, ci sono contributi speciali: Pete Whittaker all organo e una presenza davvero unica di Daevid Allen, grazie a una parte di chitarra recuperata da una session del 2001.
