Sedici concerti integrali su 14 CD, registrati tra marzo 1979 e maggio 1980 — l'ultimo a due settimane dalla morte di Ian Curtis. Non è un greatest hits rimasterizzato: è l'archivio dal vivo della band, montato da nastri d'audience, registrazioni da banco e trasmissioni radio.

Eternal raccoglie la totalità della breve vita dal vivo dei Joy Division: dai primi show del 1979 fino al concerto del 2 maggio 1980 a Birmingham, l'ultimo prima della scomparsa di Curtis. Le fonti sono official bootleg — registrazioni d'audience, nastri da banco, radio internazionali — e la qualità varia per dichiarazione esplicita: parte del materiale suona per quello che è, un fan tra il pubblico, e diversi show hanno già circolato non ufficialmente. Il valore non è la fedeltà da studio ma la completezza: molte versioni qui sono inedite o migliorate rispetto alle copie in giro. Il formato segue le Definitive Edition dei New Order — naturale, visto che dei New Order i Joy Division sono la radice diretta. Il box rigido 12" col libro fotografico di Corbijn e Cummins e i testi di Armitage trasforma l'oggetto da archivio per completisti a pezzo da scaffale: chi prende questo box lo prende sapendo cos'è, e lo prende per averlo intero.
