Composta da Mark Stein (voce, organo), Vincent Martell (chitarra, voce), Tim Bogert (basso, voce) e Carmine Appice (batteria, voce), la band era originariamente conosciuta come The Pigeons e ha guadagnato notorietà grazie alle sue interpretazioni radicali, rallentate e pesanti dei successi del momento.
Nell'aprile 1967 firmano per la Atco Records, una divisione della Atlantic, e cambiano il loro nome su insistenza del fondatore della Atlantic Ahmet Ertegun in
Vanilla Fudge. La loro radicale cover del successo delle Supremes “You Keep Me Hanging On” viene pubblicata come singolo nel giugno 1967. Dominata dall'approccio duro della loro sezione ritmica e dal potente organo Hammond di Mark Stein, divenne un successo da top 10 negli Stati Uniti. L'album di debutto autointitolato del gruppo, pubblicato nell'agosto 1967, è un tour-deforce di rock psichedelico, con una versione di sette minuti di “You Keep Me Hanging On” e fantasiose cover di composizioni dei Beatles, degli Zombies e di Curtis Mayfield. Nei due anni successivi, i VANILLA FUDGE registrarono una serie di album che
si sarebbero evoluti dal rock psichedelico all'heavy rock e avrebbero influenzato molte band emergenti, tra cui i Deep Purple, prima di sciogliersi nel 1970. Questo cofanetto di nove CD è stato rimasterizzato dai nastri originali Atco e contiene gli album “VANILLA FUDGE” e “THE BEAT GOES ON” (in versione mono e stereo) e “RENAISSANCE”, “NEAR THE BEGINNING” e “ROCK & ROLL”. Il cofanetto contiene anche un concerto completo registrato al Fillmore West la notte di Capodanno del
1968/1969 su due CDS e una serie di out-take e singoli delle sessioni. Il cofanetto contiene anche un libretto illustrato con un nuovo saggio contenente interviste esclusive a Mark Stein e Carmine Appice. Cofanetto 9CD contenenti le registraioni integrali dei Vanilla Fudge effettuate tra il 1967 e il 1969. Comprende gli album “Vanilla Fudge” (versione mono e sterei), “The Beat Goes On” (versione mono e stereo), “Renaissance”, “Near The Beginning” e “Rock & Roll”, oltre a 2 CD di registrazioni dal vivo a Fillmore West nel 1969, uscite di sessione e rari singoli.
