Nel dicembre 1973 Hilly Kristal cambiò il nome del suo bar sulla Bowery in CBGB e modificò la sua politica musicale per ingaggiare principalmente band rock. Era indifferente a molte di esse (“Nessuno vi apprezzerà, ma vi richiamerò”, disse a Joey Ramone), beatamente ignaro di quanto sarebbe presto diventato importante il suo piccolo club trasandato. Nel giro di soli 15 mesi, i cinque gruppi che compongono il pantheon del CBGB fecero tutti il loro debutto: i Television nel marzo 1974, seguiti dai Ramones in agosto e dai Blondie in ottobre, poi Patti Smith nel febbraio 1975 e i Talking Heads quattro mesi dopo. Questi cinque gruppi ottennero rapidamente contratti discografici e divennero così popolari da abbandonare il CBGB. Nell'autunno del 1977, Smith era l'unica che continuava a suonare lì. Ciò che subentrò ai Big Five fu una serie di stili nuovi e retrò, tutti presenti in questa compilation: No Wave, post-punk, mutant funk and R&B, art-rock, hardcore punk, e tanto power pop! Le band più famose del club sono presenti in questa compilation, ma abbiamo anche risvegliato l'interesse per decine di artisti ingiustamente dimenticati che, per un breve periodo, hanno realizzato un album, un EP, un 45 giri o persino un demo che crepitava di innovazione, arguzia e gioia. Il CBGB non esiste più, almeno non nel piano fisico, ma ciò che è accaduto tra quelle mura ricoperte di sporcizia e impregnate dell'odore di birra continua a risuonare in tutto il mondo.
