Jack White e T-Bone Burnett, in collaborazione con Robert Redford per il progetto cinematografico-musicale 'American epic.Il già leader dei White Stripes ha unito le forze con T-Bone Burnett, il produttore di Alison Krauss, Robert Plant e moltissimi altri. L'operazione si articola essenzialmente in due tronconi principali: il primo si concretizza nella realizzazione di un docu-film diretto da Bernard MacMahon - regista britannico già collaboratore di Garbage, Fall e Go-Betweens - che in quattro puntate segue le tracce degli a&r discografici - i talent scout - negli Stati Uniti dai tardi anni Venti a oggi, alla scoperta dei più grandi talenti che il Nordamerica abbia mai iscritto negli annali. La serie documenta la nascita e l'evoluzione "industriale" dei filoni musicali più importanti della tradizione statunitense come il blues, il country, il gospel e il folk.Parallelamente la colonna sonora del lungometraggio è impreziosita da artisti contemporanei come - tra gli altri, e oltre allo stesso Jack White - Beck, Nas, Alabama Shakes, Merle Haggard, Elton John, Taj Mahal, Willie Nelson, Raphael Saadiq, Avett Brothers, Los Lobos, Bettye LaVette, Steve Martin e Edie Brickell, The Americans, Frank Fairfield, Ana Gabriel, Rhiannon Giddens, Bobby Ingano, Auntie Geri Kuhia, Pokey LaFarge, Lost Bayou Ramblers, Fred Martin & The Levite Camp, Ashley Monroe, Charlie Kaleo Oyama, Blind Boy Paxton, che hanno registrato i propri contribuiti utilizzando solo le apparecchiature d'epoca mostrate nel docu-film.
